Glenreagh, the oldest village in the Orara Valley of NSW, was settled in 1858 as sheep/cattle run

("Glen Righ") and established as a town in 1883 following a gold discovery at Tallawudjah Creek in 1881. Later anchored by timber and dairying, its history is defined by the 1924–1972 railway connecting it to Dorrigo.

Key historical aspects of Glenreagh include:

  • Early Development: Originally settled in 1858, the town grew following the 1881 discovery of gold, leading to its official gazetting in 1883.
  • Timber and Agriculture: Post-gold rush, the economy shifted heavily towards timber milling and dairying.
  • Glenreagh to Dorrigo Railway: Opened in 1924, this branch line was crucial for transporting timber, despite being costly to build and maintain. It closed in 1972 due to flood damage and high operating costs.
  • Railway Preservation: Today, the Tallowood Mountain Rail Trail works to preserve the railway heritage, offering visitors insights into the town's industrial past.
  • Cultural Heritage: The Glenreagh Memorial Museum (located in the 1915 School of Arts building) displays artifacts from its gold mining, railway, and timber history.
  • Key Landmarks: The village is known for the "Golden Dog" sculpture and hosts the annual Glenreagh Timber Festival.
  • Glenreagh Memorial Museum: The museum's collection covers many aspects of life in the valley, including: * Gold mining * Timber industry * Education * Social and much more
